The last day we were in Arequipa, I set out to find some of the bakeries listed in the tour guide. They were primarily located on Calle Jerusalen, which I affectionately renamed Bread Street. Our early morning proved successful on some levels, but one of the bakeries I most wanted to visited seemed to have relocated.
After a jaunt up Bread Street and a visit to a hole in the wall bakery and a conversation with a gal there. My questions provoked her to think I worked in a bakery somewhere. We left and were on a search for guaguas at the other end of the street. We almost passed right by the much-searched bakery.
Sure enough, once inside the courtyard, the sign for La Canasta was completely obvious. They were soon to open their doors to the morning visitors, of which we first in line. We were overwhelmed by the selection of breads and desserts and anxious to drink a hot cup of coffee. We sat in the courtyard area and ordered from a nice girl who hadn’t even had time to change into her uniform.
Everything was delicious and absolutely worth the wait. If you are in the Arequipa area, don’t miss out on a delicious bakery tucked away for the persistent bread lovers. They open at 8:30am and there is no sign on the street.

This looks like a great place to have a meal!
The food sounds wonderful, and the last picture looks beautiful! I’d love to eat at a cafe/bakery like that.
OK, if that project that was suppose to take me to Peru comes back to life you are taking me there right?! right!!
Gretchen you really are a girl after my heart. What an incredible life adventure you are living. What a cup of coffee that must have been. Would that I could enjoy with you.
DTW – It was perfect!
Christina – The food was great and certainly worth finding!
Mary – Hehe! Well, it is certainly not in Lima! We may have to look for one around here.
Tanna – Thanks! Oh yes, maybe we will have coffee one day over a table instead of the computer!
