One of the ways people make money in Peru is by boarding a bus and begging or selling things. On New Years Eve, a man boarded the bus with bags of grapes. Bags of 12 grapes to be exact.
I chuckled and this caused the girl sitting beside me to let out a chuckle as well. Peru has quite its share of New Year’s traditions, one of them including grapes. For each month of the New Year, you eat a grape and make a wish for that month. Better yet if you do this under the table right at midnight. No I’m not kidding.
I won’t get into the burning of the scarecrow-like dolls or the yellow underwear or the walking around the block with your luggage packed. I’ll save those for next year.
Personally, I don’t much believe in wish making. Especially under a table, with grapes at midnight. But since grapes are being sold everywhere I go, I thought it only fitting to make something with them.
Several mornings now, I have thrown together a fruit salad for breakfast that has just the right amount of sweet and crunch. Come, celebrate the New Year with me, and eat a grape. But don’t feel like you must sit under the table to do it!
1 apple, cubed
12 grapes, seeded & halved
1 rib of celery, diced
2 tablespoons of sunflower seeds
1/3 cup of drinkable yogurt
In a large bowl, combine apple, grapes, celery, sunflower seeds and yogurt. Serve & enjoy!
Serves 1-2.
Kitchen Tip: To store celery, clean individual ribs cutting off the base and tops. Spread out a large piece of aluminum foil. Dampen 2 layers of paper towels and lay over the center of the foil. Spread out celery ribs over the damp paper towels. Roll up from the long side, being sure that the foil seals well at the other end. Fold (or scrunch) the two ends and store in the fridge for 7-10 days. Pull out celery ribs as needed, being sure to seal the package before returning to the fridge. (I just tried this for the first time with green onions am finding it helps keep them fresh as well!)
