Sugared Bracelets

I am not much of a jewelry person. I don the occasional necklace. I try hard to remember to put earrings on in the morning. Sure, I have a ring on my thumb that is hardly ever removed. But the one thing I enjoy buying and wearing is bracelets. I wear no watch – I gave it up years ago – but I love the elegant feel of something dangling at my wrist.

In winter, we walk about so bundled up that you usually only see a person’s eyes through all their clothing and wrapped around scarves. But now that summer is coming, I will once again return to my drawer of short sleeve shirts meaning my wrists will be revealed once again. So I will be able to display the plethora of bracelets I have.

This Christmas, I saw a bracelet I couldn’t refuse. Instead of being at a store to purchase, take home and enjoy, it was on a cookie! Normally, I would make sugar cookies with a sprinkling of colored sugar to enjoy the sweet soft cookie with a colored crunch. But, oh! Sugar cookies with bracelets? These I had to try!

Sugared Vanilla Cookies

2 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of butter, softened
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
2 large egg whites
Cooking spray
1/3 cup of colored sugar sprinkles

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt, stirring well with a whisk. Place sugar and butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium-high speed until light and fluffy (about 1 minute). Add vanilla and egg whites, beating until well blended. Beating at low speed, gradually add flour mixture, beating just until a soft dough forms. Divide dough into 2 equal portions. Place each portion on plastic wrap; shape each portion into an 8-inch log. Wrap logs in plastic wrap; freeze at least 2 hours or until very firm.

Preheat oven to 375F. Working with one dough log at a time, lightly coat each log with cooking spray. Roll each dough log in sugar sprinkles, pressing gently to adhere. Cut each dough log into 32 (1/4-inch-thick) slices; place 1 inch apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Bake at 375F for 10 minutes or until set. Remove from pans; cool completely on wire racks. Makes 64 cookies. Cooking Light, December 2005
